40 million active online shoppers, growing at 13.1% a year. That’s faster than France, Germany or the UK. International fashion, electronics and beauty brands are winning real share here, particularly in the mid-premium space where domestic supply is thinner than in Spain’s larger neighbours.

Market Overview
The fastest-growing major market in Western Europe.
Spain’s online commerce is growing at 13.1% a year (CNMC, 2024), comfortably ahead of France, Germany and the UK. Around 40 million Spanish consumers now shop online, with 70% population penetration and structural growth ahead as digital adoption matures across older age groups and smaller cities.
CNMC’s headline figure of €95.2 billion spans all online commercial activity in Spain, including travel and tourism alongside retail. It’s a broad measure rather than a pure product-sales figure, which matters when comparing Spain to markets that report retail goods only. What matters for a goods-selling brand is the underlying trajectory: three consecutive years of double-digit growth, a genuinely underserved mid-market, and rising consumer spending power.
13.1%
year-on-year growth in 2024 (CNMC), ahead of France (+7%), Germany (+3.8%) and the UK (+3.4%). The trajectory reflects rising digital adoption and increasing consumer spend online, not a short-term spike.
For US and UK brands, Spain is one of the strongest single-market opportunities on the continent. The main operational reality is VAT registration, which takes 4 to 6 months through the AEAT. That’s tied with Poland for the longest in the EU, so it’s worth starting well before launch.
Cross-Border Opportunity
Spanish shoppers buy international. Fashion and electronics lead.
Cross-border represents around 10% of Spanish ecommerce purchases (CNMC). Spanish consumers actively seek out international product in fashion, electronics, beauty and lifestyle. The US, Germany, the UK, France and China account for the largest inbound flows, with the US and Germany ranking highest for premium and quality-positioned product.
Spanish-language content, Bizum at checkout on a DTC site, and 3 to 4 day delivery are the three factors that most determine conversion for inbound brands.
10%
of Spanish ecommerce revenue flows to foreign webshops (CNMC). Fashion, electronics, beauty and lifestyle see the highest cross-border share. Mid-premium international brands fill a genuine gap between domestic champions and ultra-low-price Chinese platforms.
Chinese marketplaces have significant Spanish volume. AliExpress alone draws around 60 million monthly visits. Temu and Shein have grown rapidly at the lower price end. For mid-premium US brands, the competitive gap in the middle of the market is real and currently underserved by domestic supply.
Marketplaces
Amazon leads. El Corte Inglés is the domestic force.
Marketplaces represent around 60% of Spanish online purchases. Your own DTC store and Amazon.es both trade from day one with no Spanish entity required. Spain also has stronger domestic marketplace alternatives than most Western European markets: El Corte Inglés, PcComponentes and Miravia all hold meaningful audience share, though El Corte Inglés runs a curated approval process rather than open registration. Expandly manages account setup, listings translation and ongoing integration across every major Spanish marketplace.
Amazon.es
The starting point
The default first marketplace for international brands entering Spain. Open to international sellers without a Spanish entity requirement. Pan-EU FBA storage country, though Spanish VAT must be in place before activating.
El Corte Inglés
Strongest domestic platform
Spain’s largest department store group with around 74 million monthly online visits. Marketplace opened to external sellers in 2022, with a curated approach across fashion, beauty, home, electronics and gourmet food. Requires Spanish VAT registration. Strong fit for mid-to-premium brands.
AliExpress
Price-competitive scale
Around 60 million monthly visits in Spain, among the highest AliExpress penetrations in Western Europe. Dominant for electronics accessories, home goods and fast fashion.
PcComponentes
Consumer electronics specialist
Spain’s leading technology marketplace with 8 million monthly visitors and strong brand loyalty in tech categories. Has expanded from core computing into home, sports and garden adjacent categories.
Miravia
Lifestyle and beauty, growing fast
Fast-growing Spanish marketplace focused on lifestyle, fashion and beauty. Well-positioned for brands targeting premium and trending categories with younger Spanish consumers.
Wallapop / Vinted Spain
Resale context
Wallapop is Spain’s dominant C2C classifieds and resale platform; Vinted is growing fast in fashion resale. Both are important competitive context for fashion and lifestyle brands.
How Spanish Consumers Shop and Pay
Bizum is essential for your DTC site. Cards still lead overall.
Cards (Visa, Mastercard) remain the single largest payment method in Spain at around 40% of transactions. Bizum, Spain’s bank-to-bank instant payment system, has grown to around 30 million users and now accounts for 21% of ecommerce transactions.
On Amazon.es and El Corte Inglés, both platforms handle Bizum and all other payment methods within their own checkout infrastructure, so no integration is needed on your part. For your own DTC website, Bizum integration is non-negotiable for conversion with Spanish consumers under 40, particularly on mobile.
30m
Bizum users in Spain, essentially the entire adult Spanish banking population. DTC sites without Bizum lose measurable conversion compared with those that have it, particularly in mobile-first checkout flows.
Integration is straightforward through Stripe, Adyen, Redsys or Mollie. Delivery expectations vary by region. Same-day is operational across Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Malaga and Valencia; standard 48-hour delivery covers most of the peninsula.
Spanish consumers are price-conscious on delivery fees; free shipping or a low flat rate matters more than raw speed in most categories. Return rates are lower than Germany, but free returns remain the competitive standard.
Top Categories in Spain
Where you win in Spain.
Fashion accounts for the largest volume; electronics leads the marketplace stack. Rising Spanish disposable income is shifting demand toward quality and premium positioning across most categories.

Fashion, Apparel & Accessories
Spain’s largest online category by volume. Zara and Inditex dominate domestically, but international brands perform strongly in mid-premium and specialty segments.
Strong fit
Technology & Consumer Electronics

Solid fit
Sports, Fitness & Active Lifestyle
Decathlon dominates retail. Outdoor, cycling and padel are all significant, with padel search interest among the highest in Europe.
Solid fit
Multi-category & Diverse Portfolio
Amazon.es rewards broad product portfolios given the platform’s reach and Spain’s above-average Prime membership growth among major EU markets.
Compliance and Tax
VAT takes 4 to 6 months. Start it first.
Spanish VAT registration takes 4 to 6 months through the AEAT, tied with Poland for the longest in the EU. This single fact should drive every Spain launch timeline. EPR registrations are day-one mandatory for packaging, WEEE and batteries. Expandly handles every requirement below as part of compliance setup.

Logistics and Fulfillment
Three to four days from our Netherlands warehouse.
Our Netherlands warehouse near Schiphol Airport delivers to Spanish addresses in 3 to 4 days by road, with standard EU customs flow and no Brexit-style friction. For most brands at launch, this covers the full country adequately.
As volume grows and same-day delivery in Madrid or Barcelona becomes operationally important, Spanish-based warehousing can be added through the Expandly platform.
3-4 days
delivery to all Spanish addresses. SEUR (DPD Group) is the dominant Spanish carrier, with DHL, MRW, Nacex, Correos and GLS Spain all integrated through the Expandly platform. Same-day delivery in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Malaga and Valencia from in-country stock as volume justifies it.
Amazon also operates 40+ logistics sites in Spain; Pan-EU FBA moves stock to Spanish centres automatically once activated, though Spanish VAT registration must be in place first, and given the 4 to 6 month lead time, this needs planning upfront.
Cultural Considerations
Spanish first. Three Kings Day is not Christmas.
Spanish (Castilian) is non-negotiable for consumer-facing content. Machine-rendered Spanish is immediately obvious and costs conversion. Regional language adaptation, in Catalan, Galician or Basque, significantly improves performance in regional campaigns.
Spanish consumers are notably price-conscious compared to French or German buyers; discount messaging and visible promotions work well. Social commerce through Instagram and TikTok has among the highest commercial conversion rates in Europe here, particularly for fashion and beauty targeting under-35s.
Three Kings Day (Dia de Reyes) on 6 January is the main gift-giving holiday in Spain, more commercially significant for children’s gifts, toys, fashion and electronics than Christmas Day itself.
Q4 planning in Spain needs to run through 6 January, not just 25 December. Brands targeting Spanish Q4 should plan inventory, marketing and ad spend with Three Kings Day as the primary gifting moment.
How Expandly Helps
Your Spain launch,
handled.
Spain rewards brands that start VAT early and localise properly. The 4 to 6 month registration timeline is a moat that keeps out the brands who don’t plan for it. Expandly is built for brands that want Spain’s growth without absorbing the regulatory and operational complexity into your team.
Our Global Expansion Pathway (GEP™) sequences every step. Andy Hooper’s methodology has handled Spanish launches for 2,000+ brands. For Spain, here’s what that looks like:
- Spanish VAT registration with the AEAT, initiated as the first compliance action given the 4 to 6 month lead time
- Packaging EPR, WEEE and batteries EPR registrations where applicable to your product range
- Bizum integration at checkout for your DTC site, alongside cards, PayPal and BNPL
- Native Spanish translation of listings, customer service templates and key website pages, with regional adaptation where applicable
- Amazon.es, El Corte Inglés, PcComponentes, Miravia and Zalando integration covering listings, inventory sync and order flow
- Fulfillment from our Netherlands warehouse with 3 to 4 day delivery to all Spanish addresses, plus returns processing

Frequently Asked Questions
What founders ask before launching in Spain.
Is Spain a good market for US and UK ecommerce brands?
Yes. Spain is growing faster than any other major Western European market: 13.1% year on year in 2024, with 40 million active online shoppers and rising disposable income. For US and UK brands, the trust profile for international product is strong across fashion, electronics and beauty, and the competitive set is thinner than in Germany or France. The main constraints are the 4 to 6 month VAT registration process and the need for native Spanish content and Bizum on DTC sites. Both are manageable with the right planning and setup partner.
How long does Spanish VAT registration really take?
4 to 6 months through the AEAT, tied with Poland for the longest in the EU. This is the single most important operational fact about Spain: brands need to start VAT registration well before marketing or fulfillment is finalised. Expandly initiates Spanish VAT registration as the first compliance action when Spain is in scope.
What is Bizum and do I need to offer it?
Bizum is Spain’s bank-to-bank instant payment system with 30 million users and 21% ecommerce transaction share. On Amazon.es and El Corte Inglés, both platforms handle Bizum for buyers, so no integration is needed. For your own DTC website, Bizum integration is non-negotiable for conversion with Spanish consumers under 40, particularly on mobile.
What is Three Kings Day and why does it matter for launch planning?
Three Kings Day (Dia de Reyes) on 6 January is the main gift-giving holiday in Spain, more commercially significant for children’s gifts, toys, fashion and electronics than Christmas Day. Q4 planning in Spain needs to run through 6 January. Brands targeting Spanish Q4 should plan inventory, marketing and ad spend with Three Kings Day as the primary gifting moment.
Which marketplaces matter most in Spain?
Amazon.es is open to international sellers without a Spanish entity and is the natural first move. El Corte Inglés is the strongest domestic platform with 74 million monthly visits, but requires Spanish VAT and applies a curated seller approach. AliExpress dominates price-competitive categories, PcComponentes leads electronics, and Miravia is a fast-growing lifestyle and beauty channel.
Can I serve Spanish customers from outside Spain?
Yes. Our Netherlands warehouse delivers to Spanish addresses in 3 to 4 days by road, with standard EU customs flow. For most brands at launch, this covers the full country adequately. As volume grows and same-day delivery in Madrid or Barcelona becomes a priority, Spanish-based warehousing can be added.
