Market Overview
The deepest, most mature ecommerce market in Europe.
The UK has long been Europe’s anchor ecommerce market and remains the deepest by structural maturity. 89% of UK adults shopped online in 2024 (GWP Group / MicroBizMag survey), among the highest rates in Europe. The UK isn’t covered by the EU’s official Eurostat survey post-Brexit, so this figure uses UK-specific research rather than the EU measure used elsewhere on this site. Around 62.1 million active online shoppers spend over £200 billion a year across retail goods and services.
Growth has moderated to the 3 to 5% range after a decade of double-digit expansion, but the absolute scale and consumer sophistication remain unmatched. UK shoppers are early adopters of new payment methods, fulfillment models and marketplace formats.
89%
of UK adults shopped online in 2024 (GWP Group / MicroBizMag survey). Penetration is high across age bands, with strong growth in the 65+ demographic. The UK is structurally a digital-first retail market.
For US brands, the UK is often the natural first European market: shared language, established consumer recognition of US brands, and a relatively familiar regulatory environment. For EU brands, the UK is now a separate territory post-Brexit, requiring its own VAT, Responsible Person and customs handling.
Cross-Border Opportunity
UK shoppers buy international. US brands lead the inbound mix.
Cross-border accounted for 17% of UK ecommerce by value as of 2022 (CBCommerce Europe), the most recent sourced figure. The share is likely higher today given the growth of Temu, Shein and AliExpress since that date. US brands account for the largest single-country inbound share.
International brands with recognizable positioning and price competitiveness perform best; the trust threshold for buying from an unfamiliar overseas brand is generally lower in the UK than in most EU markets.
17%
of UK online retail is cross-border (CBCommerce Europe, 2022). UK consumers actively seek out international brands and the trust profile for US-origin product is high.
For cross-border sellers, fast, transparent delivery and hassle-free returns remain the biggest levers on conversion, regardless of country of origin.
Marketplaces
The deepest marketplace mix in Europe.
Marketplaces account for around 40% of UK online retail by value. Your own DTC store, Amazon.co.uk, eBay UK and OnBuy all trade from day one with no UK entity required, giving you the most varied set of open channels in Europe. Expandly manages account setup, listings and integration across every major UK marketplace.
Amazon.co.uk
The default starting point
UK’s largest marketplace by volume and traffic. Prime membership is widely held. The standard first UK marketplace for US brands. Pan-EU FBA is no longer applicable post-Brexit; UK-domestic FBA is operated separately.
eBay UK
Established second platform
Strong across consumer electronics, fashion, automotive, collectibles. Less B2C-curated than Amazon but with deep audience and established trust signals.
OnBuy
UK-owned alternative, open to US sellers
UK-based marketplace positioned as a seller-friendly alternative to Amazon. Lower fees, no competition with house brands. OnBuy explicitly accepts US-based sellers, requires no UK entity, and accepts WorldFirst or Payoneer for payouts. It also accepts a Freepost or collection service instead of a UK returns address. Note that OnBuy’s own onboarding doesn’t require UK VAT registration for its purposes, but UK VAT law is separate and still applies with no threshold once goods are held in the UK at the point of sale.
ASOS Marketplace
Fashion at scale
Curated fashion marketplace within the ASOS ecosystem. Strong fit for independent fashion brands targeting the 18 to 34 demographic.
Etsy UK
Independent and craft
Largest single non-Amazon marketplace for handmade, vintage and craft sellers. Strong UK audience and seller community.
B&Q Marketplace
Home and DIY
UK’s largest home improvement retailer’s third-party marketplace. Strong fit for DIY, garden, and home brands.
How UK Consumers Shop and Pay
Cards lead. BNPL is now mainstream.
Credit and debit cards dominate UK ecommerce. Visa and Mastercard cover the overwhelming majority of transactions. PayPal sits alongside cards as the digital wallet of choice.
Buy-now-pay-later has moved from emerging to mainstream. Klarna, Clearpay and Afterpay are widely offered at checkout, particularly in fashion, beauty and consumer electronics. Apple Pay and Google Pay adoption is high on mobile. Unlike most EU markets, there is no single dominant local payment method to integrate; the UK is unusually card-friendly by European standards.
55–57%
of UK ecommerce transactions are completed on mobile (eMarketer / Mordor Intelligence, 2025). Smartphones account for approximately 78% of retail site traffic, so mobile-optimised checkout is essential.
For DTC checkouts, Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, Klarna and Clearpay integrations are standard through Stripe, Adyen or your preferred provider. No single non-card method is essential the way iDEAL is in the Netherlands or Carte Bancaire is in France.
UK returns culture favours free, easy returns — Amazon’s returns experience has set the consumer bar, and free returns are increasingly expected by UK shoppers regardless of channel.
Top Categories in the UK
Where you win in the UK.
Strong UK performance in 2024–25 was led by beauty, health and wellness, pet supplies, and consumer electronics. Fashion is structurally large but heavily contested.
Strong fit
Beauty, Personal Care & Cosmetics
UK is the second largest beauty ecommerce market in Europe. Strong premium and indie demand. Cult Beauty, Lookfantastic and Boots dominate alongside DTC.
Strong fit
Health, Wellness & Nutrition
High UK consumer spend on wellness and supplements. Holland & Barrett, Boots and Amazon all relevant. MHRA compliance for any product near medicinal claims.
Strong fit
Pet Supplies & Care
UK pet ownership is among the highest in Europe. Pets at Home dominates retail; ecommerce share growing rapidly. Premium and wellness pet products perform especially well.
Solid fit
Fashion, Apparel & Accessories
Structurally large but competitive. ASOS, Boohoo, Shein, Vinted and Amazon all active. Mid-premium positioning and provenance still win.
Solid fit
Technology & Consumer Electronics
Amazon.co.uk, Currys, AO.com, eBay all relevant. UK consumers compare across multiple platforms. UKCA marking required for many product categories.
Solid fit
Baby & Kids
Strong DTC opportunity. UK product safety regs apply, with British Toy Safety Standards distinct from CE.
Compliance and Tax
Post-Brexit, the UK is its own compliance regime.
UK VAT registration takes around 11 weeks through HMRC. The UK is the only major European market with threshold-based packaging EPR, and it works in three tiers: below £1m turnover AND 25 tonnes of packaging a year, there’s no obligation at all; between £1m–£2m / 25–50t (“small producer”), you must register and report annually but pay no fees; above £2m / 50t (“large producer”), you register, report and pay fees. A UK-based Responsible Person is required separately from any EU RP. Expandly handles every requirement below as part of compliance setup.

Logistics and Fulfillment
UK-domestic fulfillment from our UK warehouses.
For UK customer fulfillment, our UK warehouses provide next-day delivery to most addresses. Post-Brexit, fulfilling from inside the UK avoids the customs friction that EU-origin shipments now require.
UK-domestic fulfillment keeps delivery times fast and predictable, removing the customs delay that now applies to shipments crossing from the EU into the UK post-Brexit.
Next-day
delivery to most UK addresses from our UK warehouses. Royal Mail Tracked 24, DPD next-day, Evri next-day and InPost (out-of-home locker and doorstep delivery, formerly Yodel: InPost acquired Yodel in 2025 and is phasing out the Yodel brand through 2026) all available. Same-day in London and major metro areas via dedicated carriers.
For brands also serving the EU, our Netherlands warehouse near Schiphol Airport handles EU-side stock. UK orders are fulfilled UK-domestic, EU orders from the Netherlands, two operations in parallel through the Expandly platform. Amazon FBA in the UK operates separately from EU FBA post-Brexit.
Cultural Considerations
UK English matters more than you think.
English removes the translation barrier, but localization is still essential. Spelling, terminology, units, sizing, currency and tone all need to read as UK-native, not US-imported.
Spelling: colour, favour, organise. Terminology: trousers not pants, jumper not sweater. Currency: pounds (£) with prices including VAT. Sizing: UK clothing and shoe sizes differ from US and EU.
UK consumer tone is more reserved than US copy: less hype, more substance. Self-deprecating humor and understatement land well.
Trustpilot, Feefo and Which? ratings carry real weight — displaying third-party review scores prominently outperforms hype-driven marketing copy imported from a US playbook.
How Expandly Helps
Your UK launch,
handled.
The UK rewards brands that take Brexit seriously. Customs, separate UK Responsible Person, UKCA marking assessment, threshold-based EPR planning, and UK English localization all need handling before launch.

- HMRC VAT registration plus ongoing Making Tax Digital filings
- UK Responsible Person appointment, separate from any EU RP arrangement
- EPR threshold assessment: no obligation below £1m / 25t; register and report only (no fees) between £1m–£2m / 25–50t; register, report and pay fees above £2m / 50t — plus WEEE and batteries EPR from day one where relevant
- UKCA marking assessment across your SKU range where applicable
- EORI number plus customs documentation set up for UK–EU movements
- UK English localization review of listings, customer service templates and key pages
- Amazon.co.uk, eBay UK, OnBuy, Etsy UK, ASOS Marketplace integration
- UK-domestic fulfillment from our UK warehouses, plus EU bridge from our Netherlands warehouse

Frequently Asked Questions
What founders ask before launching in the UK.
Is the UK still a good market for US brands post-Brexit?
Yes. The UK is still the most mature ecommerce market in Europe. £127.4 billion in online retail sales in 2024 (ONS), 89% online penetration, and 62 million active online shoppers. For US brands, the UK remains the natural first European market by shared language, established US brand recognition, and a regulatory environment that is now separate from but no more complex than the EU.
How long does UK VAT registration take?
UK VAT registration through HMRC typically takes around 11 weeks for non-resident sellers. There is no minimum turnover threshold for non-UK businesses, so registration is required from the first UK sale. Making Tax Digital compatible software is needed for ongoing VAT returns. Expandly handles UK VAT registration and ongoing filings as part of the standard expansion package.
Do I need a separate UK Responsible Person if I already have one for the EU?
Yes. Post-Brexit, an EU-based Responsible Person does not cover the UK. A UK-based Responsible Person is required separately for most regulated consumer product categories. The UK RP must be established in the UK and is named on product packaging and documentation. Expandly provides UK RP coverage as a standard part of UK compliance setup.
What is the UK EPR threshold and why does it matter?
The UK is the only major European market with a threshold-based packaging EPR system, and it works in three tiers. Below £1 million turnover AND 25 tonnes of packaging a year: no obligation at all — no registration, no reporting, no fees. Between £1m–£2m turnover and 25–50 tonnes (“small producer”): register and report annually, but no fees. Above £2m turnover and 50 tonnes (“large producer”): register, report and pay fees. WEEE and batteries EPR remain day-one mandatory regardless of turnover if relevant to your category.
Which marketplaces matter most in the UK?
Amazon.co.uk is the default starting point, by audience scale and Prime membership coverage. eBay UK is the established second platform. OnBuy is a UK-owned Amazon alternative with lower fees. Category-specific platforms: ASOS Marketplace for independent fashion, Etsy UK for handmade and craft, B&Q Marketplace for DIY and home. Expandly manages account setup and listings across all of them.
Can I serve UK customers from an EU warehouse?
Technically yes, but it means UK customs friction on every shipment and slower delivery times. Most brands launching properly into the UK fulfill UK-domestic from a UK warehouse. Expandly’s UK warehouses provide next-day delivery to most UK addresses. For brands also serving the EU, our Netherlands warehouse handles EU-side stock in parallel.
