The first country you choose doesn’t just set your launch date. It sets your logistics footprint, your working capital cycle and your compliance load for everything that follows.
Compliance failures rarely surface at launch. They surface six months later, when cash is tighter, growth has accelerated, and unwinding the mistake costs more than getting it right would have.
Ads don’t kill margin overseas. The supply chain does, longer lead times, more customs exposure, more fulfilment nodes, more currency movement, all multiplying the moment you cross a border.
Most brands launch everywhere at once: Shopify, Amazon, eBay, TikTok, wholesale and retail, all in the same market in the same month. That’s channel chaos, not scale. We stabilise your platform first...
Brands rarely fail to grow. They fail by growing too early, pouring spend and ambition onto governance that isn’t structured, logistics that can’t absorb it, and channels that were never sequenced. Once Explore...
Most brands don’t lose internationally because they picked the wrong market. They lose because they never built a roadmap at all, so expansion becomes a series of launches and reactive fixes...
Amazon handed prep work back to sellers, and the consequences of getting it wrong land on you rather than on them. A carton that arrives wrong gets refused, refused stock sits somewhere earning nothing, and a launch date moves.
FBM keeps the things worth keeping. Your packaging, customer data & margin. It also puts Amazon’s performance metrics directly on your dispatch times, which is a comfortable trade at home and a much harder one from four thousand miles away.
On a marketplace, a slow delivery is the marketplace’s fault. On your own store it is yours. The box that arrives, the day it arrives and how easy it is to send back are all part of what someone bought, and they decide whether a first order becomes a second one.
Treated as a cost, a return is written off twice, once on the refund and again on the unit. Treated as inventory, a lot of it goes back on sale. What decides which of those happens is how quickly the unit gets looked at and how far it had to travel to be looked at.
Stock held inside the market it sells into arrives as a domestic delivery. No customs event on the order, and nothing for your customer to settle before the courier hands the parcel over. Ours sits in the UK, the Netherlands and the US, which covers...

A new selling route between the UK and eight EU markets opens on 21 September 2026, when TikTok Shop starts a cross-border pilot, with a broader rollout following on 19 October 2026. Sellers in Belgium, Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain will be able to reach UK consumers. UK sellers get reciprocal access to those same eight markets.
The channel is genuinely new. What sits behind it is not. TikTok is opening the shop window, and the seller still owns everything that happens after the order is placed. Couriers and customer service for those cross-border orders are the seller's responsibility, which is stated plainly in the announcement.
That single line decides whether this is an opportunity or an expensive experiment. A UK-registered seller shipping to a buyer in Germany is making an export. A German seller shipping to a buyer in London is making one too. Both directions cross a customs border, both create a VAT question, and both put a delivery promise in front of a consumer who has no interest in whose border it was.
For a US brand watching from the outside, the read is more useful than the feature. Social commerce in Europe is fragmenting into country-level shopfronts that each expect local fulfilment, local returns and local tax registration behind them. Each new channel adds reach without adding any of that infrastructure. The brands that convert on these channels are the ones that already had stock, registrations and a returns path inside the region before the channel opened.
Treat the September and October dates as a planning window rather than a launch date. If your catalogue is not already compliant for the destination market, a faster route to the consumer simply gets you to the problem sooner.
Expandly sets up marketplace channels alongside the VAT registrations, compliance evidence and local fulfilment that make them work.
Expandly helps US ecommerce brands expand into Europe — compliance, marketplaces and fulfilment, all handled. We’ve supported 2,000+ brands make the move.
TikTok Shop opening reciprocal UK and EU selling from 21 September 2026 puts a new consumer-facing channel in front of brands that may not yet be set up to fulfil behind it. Selling one catalogue across the UK and eight EU markets means separate VAT registration, product compliance evidence and producer responsibility obligations in each, and a UK registration does nothing for a German order. Expandly's onboarding is compliance-first, and for a marketplace-led brand the first step is a channel and market review that fixes the VAT registrations and listing requirements each destination will ask for. Getting that in place before 19 October 2026 is the difference between a channel that converts and one that generates chargebacks.
EU Cross-Border Marketplace Share
Marketplaces generated EUR 247.5bn of the EUR 358.7bn EU cross-border ecommerce market. For a US brand, channel strategy in Europe is mostly marketplace strategy, and each channel carries its own setup.

Seller-Side Delivery Obligation
EU sellers reaching UK consumers through this route must arrange their own couriers and handle their own customer service. That means an outbound customs movement, a returns path and a service standard you own rather than inherit.
